At the 68th Cannes International Film Festival this year, Hou Hsiao-hsien won best director award for ‘The Assassin’. No stranger to Cannes, Hou Hsiao-hsien has previously entered the main competition seven times. His 1993 masterpiece The Puppetmaster won the grand jury prize. Another Chinese director, Jia Zhangke, was the first Chinese director to win a Golden Chariot award for lifetime achievement. He served numerous times on the Cannes Film Festival Jury and won best screenplay in 2013 for A Touch of Sin.
