Hangzhou held its annual “car free day” on September 22, which saw the banning of private vehicles, excluding bicycles and electric powered automobiles. The prohibition saw a notable increase in the use of public transport, with many passengers having to miss multiple buses before finally being able to squeeze aboard one. The subway was also much busier. Although scenes of open roads were pleasing to many, the faces of many commuters reflected their distress. One netizen praised Hangzhou residents for abiding by the rules of the day.
